Remote workers account for 22.5% of those in work in Q3 – CSO
New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that people who usually worked from home accounted for 22.5% of people in employment in the third quarter of 2022, up from 7.3% during the same time in 2019.
The number of people usually working from home saw a sharp rise since pre-Covid pandemic levels, increasing from 169,300 in the third quarter of 2019 to 574,100 – a jump of 239% – in the third quarter of this year.
Dublin had the highest proportion of people employed who usually work from home, increasing from 6.5% in Q3 2019 to 30% in Q3 2022.
This was followed by the Mid-East, which increased from 6.7% to 23.5% and the Midlands, which increased from 6.2% to 21%.
Border counties had the highest proportion of persons never working from home at 79.3% in Q3 2022, followed by the West and Mid-West at 73.6% and 71.7% respectively.
The CSO’s latest Labour Force Survey Employment Series also shows that total employment increased by 9.9% to 2,554,300 between the third quarter of 2019 and the third quarter of 2022.
It noted that full-time employment increased by 9.1% from 1,851,200 in the third quarter of 2019 to 2,018,800 in 2022.
Part-time employment increased by 13.4% from 472,200 to 535,500 over the same time period.
The CSO said the “professional” occupational group had the highest number of employees in the third quarter of this year at 504,000 – or 22.9% of all employees.
Meanwhile, nine out of every ten employees (90.5%) were in permanent employment in the third quarter of 2022.
Today’s figures show that women accounted for 40.7% of workers in full-time employment and 67.5% of persons in part-time employment in the three months from July to September 2022.
This compares with 39.5% and 70.4% respectively for full-time and part-time during the same time in 2019.
Meanwhile, self-employed people on average usually worked more hours than employees in three month period under review – 41.1 hours a week compared with 35.6 hours a week – today’s CSO figures also reveal.
